so we haven't been updating the blog much because we are going to be launching a new website soon that will replace it, but those of you following our twitter have been getting the play by play of the craziest month of SMB news ever.. here's a recap.

-SMB is coming to Xbox Live as well as Wiiware and Pc sometime around summer of this year!

-Issue 2 of the SMB comics has been printed and will be given away at GDC, those of you who miss the event will get a chance to buy it or win one via our twitter contest starting mid march.

-Game Pro did a very positive 3 page feature on SMB last month and featured article Edmund wrote in this months issue about the do's and dont's of indie game design.

-A few days ago we got to demo SMB at the Nintendo summit in SF to the press and more importantly Reggie.

Uncut Kotaku Interview

So Kotaku recently sent out interview questions to the IGF finalists to show in a feature they were doing on the independent game festival.

Our interview went up today, but sadly the interview was edited down to 2 questions and because of that our answers were taken a bit out of context.

The following is the full Kotaku Interview.

Q: What was the inspiration behind your game?

Edmund: Super meat boy was inspired by a divine guidance or influence exerted directly on the mind and soul of humankind.

Tommy: My grandfather had a saying, "I don't know what the key to success is, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone". That quote has stuck with me all this time and when I am helping with a game I really remember him saying those words to me.

Q: Q: What do you do for a living now? What do you hope to do?

Edmund: I currently make video games for a living, actually my most recent title Super Meat Boy has been nominated for both excellence in audio as well as the grand prize in the IGF. The IGF (Institute for global futures) is a festival that was established to provide leading-edge intelligence about the emerging trends, innovations and forecasts that will impact consumers, business and society in the future. To better prepare leaders to direct change and shape the future.

Tommy: I'm actually a Assistant Manager / Barrista at StarBucks in my local mall. I work there pretty much full time, doing coding contracts on the side as well as some game dev. I hope that one day I can actually manage my own Starbucks, I'm currently going through their corporate training program and I'm very excited about finishing! That being said, I would like a career in video games. Its nice to have a solid platform to launch off of, and Starbucks internal promotion program really allows me to stay grounded yet reach for my pursue my goals. I hope to continue to make a living off said game once it is released on Steam, Wiiware and other yet to be announced console or consoles.

Q: Who or what are your greatest influences when creating a game?

Tommy: Many of your readers (probably most) have never seen the show M.A.S.H. It ran in the early 70's until the early 80's and was about a M.A.S.H. platoon in Vietnam. In M.A.S.H. Corporal Maxwell Klinger (played by Jamie Farr) constantly dresses up as a woman in order to be thrown out of the military so that he can return home. This influences me because Klinger is doing something extraordinary to get out of a of a situation that was ordinary to thousands and thousands of enlisted men and women. He is brave in his attempt to do something very unorthodox to meet a personal goal. I feel when I work on a game. I am doing something that to many people does seem extraordinary (as you mentioned in your previous question, there are several forms of expression), however it is something that I am willing to do to accomplish a goal.

Edmund: Ive found my greatest influences to be the ones with the most capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, of others.

Q: Name your favorite book, movie, album and game?

Edmund: To Kill a Mockingbird, Citizen Kane, Beach boys: Pet sounds, Pong.

Tommy: The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Up in the Air, U2: No Line on the Horizon, Modern Warfare 2.

Q: How did you come up with the name to your game?

Tommy: I actually had no say in the name of the game, but I'm very happy with the name that was chosen.

Edmund: Seeing as A name is a label for a noun, normally used to distinguish one from another. I took the name "Meat Boy" to identify a class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely, or within a given context, in this context i choose Meat Boy because the character was both a boy as well as made of meat. A personal name identifies a specific unique and identifiable individual person, and may or may not include a middle name, but in this case i choose to forgo a middle name in exchange for an introductory adjective to build on to said name.

I choose the adjective "super". a word whose main syntactic role is to modify a noun or pronoun, giving more information about the noun or pronoun's referent. the word Super is given to show that in this case "Meat Boy" is to be looked at as of the highest degree, power, etc.

You Unlocked Flywrench!

We announced last night on our twitter that Flywrench is officially a playable character in Super Meat Boy!

When you find the secret warp zone you get sucked into the low-fi world of Flywrench, where meat boy is infiltrated by the popular flapping protagonist. You control Flywrench through 3 levels that are played out inside meat boys 4bit body. Once completed Flywrench will be avalible at the character select screen to use in any main game level.

Flywrench features the ability to fly for a short amount of time, flapping his wings to gain height and changing colors as he would in the original game.

Flywrench is a popular and critically acclaimed hardcore platformer by Mark Essen (messhof) and can be played on http://messhof.com/. (go play it if you haven't!)

Signed Meat Boy comics now for sale!

We finally got around to setting up the Super Meat Boy press comics in our etsy shop this week.

Each comic is signed by Tommy and myself, comes with 2 stickers and sell for 7$ (and if your lucky a button as well).

The comic is 12 pages long, 5.5 x 8.5 in, full color gloss with card stock cover. Originally made to hand out to press to announce the game "Super Meat Boy issue 1" was printed in Sept. 09. and limited to 1,000 copies and given out as a price on our weekly contests on twitter.

Once the comics are sold out this issue will never be reprinted, we will be printing a new issue closer to GDC, but once the current issue is gone its gone for good.

Hi,

Tommy here. I got back from London last week after showing the first playable version of Super MeatBoy to a bunch of press people from around Europe and the UK. I took a bunch of pictures, but unfortunately, I lost my camera. No joke...this is my luck. Anyway, it went over extremely well in London and we are super pumped to get the first chapter done and playable in the next couple of weeks. We released a trailer on a few sites (LOOKING AT YOU KOTAKU...WHERE'S THE LOVE?) and we've had some questions...mainly about the end of the trailer. Here is your answer:

Yes...at the end of the trailer that is a simultaneous replay of the last 40 attempts at the level shown in game after you beat a level if you want to view it. Its purely for entertainment, awesome, and "because I can" purposes. Past "Because I Can" features in games include putting webcam support into Goo!. I do these things because they are awesome and I like doing them:) I just wrote it a few days before we did that video, so it isn't optimized at all. Ideally, I want to have about the last 100 attempts....but that's me. You all know me:)

1st hands on preview from the London event.

"Well, if this game doesn’t symbolise the greatness that WiiWare can produce, we’re pretty stumped as to what can. Team Meat’s hilarious (and maybe slightly controversial) game Super Meat Boy is what we’d call a truly challenging and rewarding platformer. Playing as a bleeding chunk of meat, you must transverse a world of platforming peril full of meat grinders and all other stuff that could make our hero meat his maker (sorry, couldn’t resist!). This simply plays fantastically; we were compelled in each level to try and try again to reach that end goal and the sumptuous Bandaid Girl. Truly, this is one of the hardest and morbidly amusing platformers we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing – and with a villain called Dr Fetus, what self respecting adult could avoid giving this one a whirl? A real meaty platformer (well, I didn't say I was going to stop with the puns, did I?)"

The London Gameplay trailer

Here ya go, 1st footage of Super Meat Boy.. i kinda sorta youtube HD quality.

Im re-posting this because there's been a strange leak of gameplay footage that has gotten around that im not too happy with... this was the intended trailer.

so please feel free to float this one around the big ol net.

We have been getting a lot of questions about the vid, so ill address the most common here.

-There will be warp zones hidden in levels that are only accessible for a limited time, if you enter them they will warp you into "retro world" where you play as 8bit meat boy, but you also play by old school rules. (check out the :50 second mark to see what im talking about)

-The sea of meat boys at the end of the trailer is our first footage of the replay system. When you complete a level you will have the option to view a replay.. that shows every single attempt at the level. a nice visual pay off for a job well done.

-This trailer is obviously early, it features simple levels found in the 1st chapter of the game, the forest. there will be 5 complete chapters in the finished game, and well over 150 levels to play.

We will be posting footage of the level editor in action as well as an animated intro in the next week.

Its been a little while since the last update, but that's because we have been busy!! busy making "awesome".

So that "awesome" i mentioned above will actually be playable in London on the 16th for the meat crazed press. For those of you not cool enough to go to the Nintendo press event in London we will be unveiling the 1st footage of Super Meat Boy in video form, shortly after the event.. and maybe even some footage of this so called "level editor" that Tommy doesn't want you to know about.

The next month will be a big leap for Super Meat Boy, with a full site revamp, gameplay videos, intro animations and even a some real info on the game! Gosh!

We will also be announcing the next secret playable character and putting something very special in the meat boy store for the super fans...

oh also Bandaid girl is now called Bandage girl.. you know so we don't get sued.

So as some of you know Tommy and i are crunching to get a playable build of SMB ready for Pax in early Sept. Things have been moving so quickly and looking so awesome that we couldn't help but upload a video with stills of the current build as well as some downright amazing music from the master himself Danny B.

The new track is actually a remix of the original forest music that was in the flash version of the game, but about 50,000 times better, and that's totally nuts because, its identical to my high score on double dragon!.. ZOINKS.

The images you see in the video are screen caps from the forest chapter of our current beta. Keep in mind these images are still VERY early and dont feature many of the "cream in your pants" effects Tommy will be working in over the next few months.

Whats long, black and has one eye?....?

If you said Commander Video from the bit.trip series you would be mostly correct. I know we have announced Commander video in nintendo power.. but last week i finished up all the character art for all the hidden characters and thought id unveil the official CV image in tribute to the launch of bit.trip Core that just hit wiiware last week (go buy it!! (this link wont let you buy it but it seemed like a good think to link to their homepage) ).

anyway heres the rainbow loving space man in all his meaty glory!!!.

We recently did a few interviews that can be read Here and Here(i lost the link).

Sometimes we get asked the same questions over and over, sometimes its hard to answer them the same way over and over, and sometimes my teeth fall out and try to commit suicide by jumping under my fingers as i type... so here a is bit of information that should clear up most of the more common questions.

-Controls in SMB will be GREATLY improved over the flash version.

Oh hey what's up, Tommy here. I just made something neat that will be the envy of every Flash kid around. Its a tool that exports Flash animations directly from Flash and puts them in a format that is playable by my engine which runs on Wii, PC, Xbox 360 and very very soon PS3. And don't think for a SECOND that it just exports animations frame by frame in one big series of textures...no no no that's not how I like to do things, it uses another tool I made that exports a bunch of Symbols in Flash something like this:

That right there is an example of a bunch of set pieces Edmund drew that are packaged into a texture and exported as a PNG along with a file that tells me where each piece is, how its rotated, and how big it is. It tries to package them in the smallest image possible by rotating and placing symbols as efficiently as possible. Basically its an entire library of Flash Symbols exported in one PNG that I can easily use in the engine. Now the animation exporter uses the Symbol exporter tool to export the pieces of the animations that Edmund draws and exports all of the keyframe and tweening data so I can use them in engine. Neat huh? I made a video, the video explains everything:

Super meat boy featured in Nintendo Power!

The Latest issue of Nintendo power features an interview with Tommy and I (go buy it)... its totally surreal to be featured in Nintendo power, i mean when i was 9 i remember getting the first issue so i could beat zelda. i had the dungeon map poster on my wall above my tiny tv for reference.

We "officially" announce that not only will Commander video from the Bit Trip series will be an un lockable character in SMB, but he will also have a very hard level based around Bit Trip that you will have to beat to unlock him. His level will be one of many secret warp zones hidden throughout the game.

Dont get use to every update being about unlockable characters... those are the only ones you're going to get for quite a while. hopefully tommy will put up a video of the level editor in the next few weeks :)

Speaking of Tommy, today is his birthday! so wish him a happy birthday by photo shopping his head onto something amusing, heres a pic to work with.

Alien Hominid

Those of you who read Game Informer this month already know this, but Alien Hominid was announced as an unlockable playable character... here he is in all his glory.

So we officially announced in a nintendo developer interview today that Tim (from Braid) is going to be a playable unlockable character in all versions of Super Meat Boy! now i know this was a no brainer for quite a few of you who knew that i designed Tim.. but still, This is Tim! and we all know "he never run outa that back in time potion"

Ok so we are back from GDC and once again hard at work on SMB. Its been a little while so i thought id do a little graphics update to show you guys where we are at.

Heres the 1st shot of super meat boy side by side with the original flash version.

Im currently going through and remaking the forest chapter, while Tommy gets the tile engine in place. The goal is to have a playable demo by June 1st to show at E3 and so far that's looking very possible.

That background is a mockup (imagine more depth and lighting effects in the finished version), but it can give you a basic idea of the direction im going with it, that direction being "crap your pants awesome" if that hasn't been apparently clear by now.

Speaking of crapping your pants, the escapist was kind enough to sit down with us and write up a little article/interview type deal, it pretty much sums up what meat boys all about and the basic background of how the game came to be. check it out here

The Meat Man Cometh

So two weeks ago Tommy flew out to Santa Cruz to start working full time on meat boy, things are moving steadily for him, he currently has his engine running on the wii, but a few weeks back i hit a wall when it came to meat boys new updated look.

His new design was super important, i wanted him to look fresh and updated for console, but i also wanted him to stay familiar enough that when people saw him they instantly knew he was that little low rez cube from the flash game they loved.

Heres the basic process of design from start to finish for the past month of development.

1. The original meat boy in all his low rez glory!
2. Trying basic updates, detailing and lighting, adding expression to his eyes, still looked too close to the original.
3. Tried a new style, similar to the cartoony look of the concept images ive posted.. i hated it, and more importantly its not a style that translates well when scaled down. its super important that meat boys graphics can be scaled up and down without looking strange when super tiny or very large, every thing has to translate well visually in all sizes.. and this style was the worst for this.
4. Going 3d! well kinda. using the basic concept and adding a 3d cubist dimension to it, i thought this look would work well when meat boy would turn and run, so you could see he had depth to his shape. still looked too much like the original.
5. Adding details. at this point i was trying out an SNES approach to the retro look, i also played around with giving his arms/hands more detail.. fingers and such. it was a bad idea and the details were a bit too small to see when scaled down.

At this point i was wracking my brain trying to come up with something that would give Meat boy a new updated look.. i didn't have to look far for inspiration.

Danielles plush version was sitting next to me the whole time, there was something about the size of the eyes that was very appealing to me. I played with the eyes a bit, making them a lot larger and more child like. i was very happy with how this translated visually when scaled and it also have a more innocent look to meat boys expressions.

So using these new giant eyes, the 3d aspect of #4, the details of #6 and the mouth of the concept version Super Meat Boy was born!!!!

For the past week ive been playing with some of his core animations, without going into detail on everything ill just go ahead and post my sprite sheet so far.

So there you have it, meat boy is officially starting its 2nd month of development! woot! Ill be working on finalizing all his animations, and getting all the forest level tiles done by the end of the month.

Tommy and i will be attending GDC this year, and ill be speaking at the flash game summit on the 22nd. if you're attending either feel free to say hey! ill be the nude guy covered in meat.

Tons of big Super meat boy news!

So first off the unveiling of the Super Meat Boy Teaser trailer on gametrailers.com. Created by a good friend of mine James Id, the teaser is a huge throw back to those early 90s animated MTV video bumpers, Liquid Television and NES video game commercials. Meat Boy screams early 90s nostalgia, so i thought it would be perfect to do a teaser in the same vein, and James did a really great job here.

The day the Meat stood still.

The development of Super Meat Boy has started! Tommy and i will be documenting its development onto Wiiware™ and Pc later this year and ill try and post as many screen shots and info as i can along the way.

For now heres some of the new character art and a little features list.
